Thank you 30 years!

Thank you 30 years!

In August 2023, I had the privilege of celebrating a significant milestone in my professional journey - 30 years of growth, learning, and evolution. As I reflected on this remarkable journey, a flood of emotions overwhelmed me. Looking back, it's clear that this has been an extraordinary ride, one filled with invaluable experiences and encounters with countless individuals who have left an indelible mark on my life. It's impossible not to feel an overwhelming sense of pride and gratitude for the path I've travelled.

My journey began when I graduated as a Mechanical Engineer, setting foot into the professional world as an application engineer at a prestigious German firm in the engineering industry. Back then, I had no inkling of how this path would unfold. Those early days were characterised by an unbridled sense of excitement and curiosity, propelling me into the unknown.

For almost 5 years, my life was a whirlwind of activity. I found myself constantly on the move, spending close to 20 days a month travelling on trains, visiting customers, implementing equipment, and rigorously testing machinery. During this period, my sole focus was on ensuring that the solutions we delivered to our customers not only functioned flawlessly but also left them deeply satisfied. The moments when a customer would express their contentment were the highlights of my days, filling me with an overwhelming sense of accomplishment and pride.

Amidst my extensive travels to factories and countless hours spent on train journeys, I had the privilege of encountering numerous individuals who have left an everlasting impact on my life. Simple acts like sharing a meal while working in a factory or during a train ride became cherished memories. These experiences taught me invaluable lessons about resilience in challenging circumstances and the profound importance of human connections. It became crystal clear that the pursuit of wealth or power paled in comparison to the profound influence of the people we met along the way - they were the true treasures that enriched our lives.

In 1998, I embarked on a pivotal transition to the technology industry, marking a turning point in my career. Over the years, I've had the privilege of working across eight different countries, assuming diverse roles within large consulting firms, boutique technology companies, startups, retail organisations, and banks. This transition brought about a fundamental shift in dynamics - it was no longer solely about machinery but about navigating the intricate complexities of human interactions. Engaging with stakeholders, clients, managers, leaders, teams, and adapting to various organisational structures, work models, and ever-evolving methodologies became the new norm.

Continuous learning, managing risks, addressing challenges, ensuring both customer and employee satisfaction, and confronting issues such as cybersecurity and corporate politics became the fabric of my daily work. The buzzwords multiplied - Waterfall, Agile, DevOps, and more - and understanding and mastering them all became essential skills. This phase of my career was both challenging and profoundly rewarding.

A decade into the technology world, I stood at a crossroads and had a profound realisation. In the intricate web of people and processes, simplicity emerged as the most elusive yet crucial factor. Living by my values and adhering to simplicity proved to be a formidable task. Over the course of 25 years, I embraced the mantra of "Keep it simple, silly." Work became just that - work, devoid of unnecessary emotions. I recognised that trust was vested in me to deliver, and the key lay in keeping my role straightforward. Not everyone would necessarily like or admire you, and that was perfectly acceptable. This lesson in simplicity became a cornerstone of my success.

Throughout my career, I also ventured into entrepreneurship, embarking on a rollercoaster ride of its own. The first venture succeeded and was subsequently sold, while the second one faced a substantial financial setback. The third endeavour achieved success in product development but faltered commercially. Finally, the fourth venture managed to sustain itself with a 50% success rate but eventually hibernated. I also had the distinct privilege of mentoring several startups, many of which have blossomed and thrived - a source of immense joy and fulfilment.

I wish to extend my heartfelt gratitude to my family, mentors, leaders, managers, team members, and friends who have been the guiding stars and pillars of support throughout this remarkable journey. Your wisdom, mentorship, guidance, collaboration, and unwavering friendship have been the bedrock upon which my career was built. It's you who have made this journey unforgettable, and for that, I'm profoundly grateful.

Looking forward, the road ahead remains unwritten, and I'm eager to embrace the challenges and opportunities that the future holds. Currently, I find myself deeply immersed in a ‘ME’ project, and the outcome of this endeavour will serve as the foundation for my next chapter. This journey has been an emotional rollercoaster, filled with highs and lows, but it has been a journey worth taking. I'm excited and enthusiastic about the adventures that await me on the horizon, and I look forward to sharing them with all of you.
