Live Rich: Reducing the Graveyard's Wealth

Have you ever paused to think about the richest place on Earth? Les Brown famously said, “The graveyard is the richest place on Earth because it is here that you will find all the hopes and dreams that were never fulfilled, the books that were never written, the songs that were never sung…”

This quote hits me every time I think about it. It’s haunting yet profoundly motivating. It reminds us that life is fleeting and that every unfulfilled dream or unspoken idea contributes to the graveyard’s abundance. I’ve carried this thought into a personal mission: Live Rich to Reduce the Graveyard’s Wealth.

But let me clarify - living rich isn’t about money. It’s about living fully, pursuing our dreams, and pouring ourselves into what truly matters. Unfortunately, so many of us lose time to distractions. We spend hours glued to our screens, mindlessly scrolling, binge-watching shows, or attending events we don’t even enjoy. These small distractions accumulate into big losses: lost opportunities to live, create, and contribute.

During my executive coaching journey with Marshall Goldsmith, I was introduced to a simple yet profound phrase: “Is it worth it?” This question has become my constant companion. It’s a checkpoint for every action I take, every decision I make. Every time I’m tempted to waste time or energy, I ask myself: Is it worth it? More often than not, the answer brings me back to my priorities.

This mindset isn’t new. The most remarkable figures in history lived by it. Think of Thomas Edison, whose thousands of failed experiments eventually lit up the world. He must have asked himself countless times, “Is it worth it to try again?” And each time, the answer was yes. Rosa Parks’ quiet but firm refusal to give up her bus seat was not just a single act of defiance but a testament to her unwavering belief in her cause. Leaders like Gandhi, who transformed entire nations, and Marie Curie, whose discoveries reshaped science, all shared a common thread: they lived rich lives by dedicating themselves to their passions, no matter the cost.

Closer to home, I’ve seen this principle in action among professional athletes. The cricket players we idolize don’t spend their days passively watching others play. They practice relentlessly, perfecting their craft with laser focus. Their lives are built around that constant question: Is it worth it?

If they can prioritize their dreams, why can’t we? Whether it’s writing that book, building a new idea, or simply spending more time with family, asking “Is it worth it?” shifts our perspective. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about moving forward, even when we stumble.

Here’s the hard truth: time is our most precious resource. Every moment spent living half-heartedly adds to the graveyard’s wealth. But every moment spent pursuing our dreams makes the world richer instead.

What’s Changed in My Life?

TV time is down: I’ve cut it to just 30 minutes to an hour. Books are back: I read four pages a day, consistently. The next book is in progress: I write without overthinking. Negativity is out: I’ve consciously reduced negative energy around me. A daily reminder: A Post-it on my devices reads: “Is it Worth It?”

  • TV time is down: I’ve cut it to just 30 minutes to an hour.

These small shifts have made a big difference. My days feel more purposeful, my actions more aligned with the life I want to create.

So, here’s my invitation to you: Don’t let the graveyard grow richer at the expense of your unfulfilled dreams. Let’s live rich together - right here, right now. If this resonates with you, let’s connect. Let’s take that first step toward a life of passion, purpose, and impact.
